Monday

We arrived Saturday midday, after a long flight to Rome and a short one to Verona. Our apartment at Ca' dell Orto, on the outskirts of Verona, is beautiful -- two big rooms, a little kitchen, and a patio that faces the pool. All are surrounded by a hedge fence backed by tall trees, including several old olives. Our hosts, Manuela and Chiara, couldn't be friendlier or more helpful, and Sam is especially fond of Chiara's breakfast baking -- who knew you could have such sweets to begin the day?!

Our first evening, we ventured into Verona by taxi, to eat (after a long wandering hunt) at Taverna Stella. Oh my, the Italians eat so well, and you will be reading a lot about our meals. I had sphagetti con vongole e cozze (clams & mussels), then lamb chops. Sam had 2 pastas: raviollini (e?) con burro and sphagetti piccante. I can't recall Dave's primo, but his secondo was coniglio con polenta. Everything was wonderful, as was the little bottle of valpolicello we shared. Gelato on the way home, then we hunted for a long time for a taxi, then home for a long dreamless night.

Yesterday, we began with breakfast here, then biked into Verona, where we had a snack at Piazza della Erbe(volcano cioccolate for Sam, torta pere and cioccolate, campari soda for me), and dinner outside at Piazza Bra last night, where we could hear the play being performed at L'Arena.

We are about to go explore Verona, with a bus into town, to see the museum of Castelvecchio and a few churches.
